Melissa - Which is best, a tattoo or microchip is certainly a personal decision, however I can tell you that I have had 3 dogs tattooed and 7 microchipped and my first Cavalier had such a traumatic reaction to the tattooing that I cannot come anywhere near him with the portable clippers (to cut hair on the bottom of his feet). The sound, vibration, shape and/or color of it scares him to death. He starts to shake and cry and slams himself in the back of his crate where he thinks I cannot reach him! So for him, we use the scissors. I personally think microchipping is the less traumatic option.
