I have hardwood floors throughout my entire house. When we bought the house they were covered from end to end with carpeting and vinyl sheetgoods. We removed everything and had all the floors refinished as they were 40 years old. It has been 7 years now since we refinished them. Countless puppies, 15 adult Cavaliers, and constant kid traffic have shown absolutely no wear at all. They still look just as they did when we refinished them 7 years ago (can't same the same about our furniture however!). I love hardwood floors and would recommend them to anyone.
In my new house I'm going to have tinted concrete, saw cut into large *tiles*, grouted with some type of special waterproof *grout* and sealed--both because we will have in-slab radiant heating and I don't wish to *dilute* the heat and because it is much cheaper than hardwood. My mom however is having Jonkers hardwood flooring installed in her living room and bedroom because she thinks hardwood flooring is by far the best thing asesthetically. For anyone getting the new laminates such as Pergo and Wilsonart--be sure to get a lighter color. The darker colors show every single paw print! I have a friend who has a dark color and she uses her Swiffer Wet-Vac all day long erasing those pawprints.
