Hi, Claudia, Barb, et al,
I own a Sheltie and Cavaliers. The Sheltie has always barked and
always will. (Right now he is not totally lucid all the time; we think
he has flashbacks to the war sometimes). I have Cavaliers who are noisy
no matter how they are trained and some who are quieter.
I'm really curious as to what method could be used to train the ones
who bark from birth onwards at everything? I do not debark, but live
with it. (It is my choice and I have a farm. I WANT my Sheltie to bark
to let me know when people arrive). However, spraying water, firm
commands, absolute behavior mod and everything else has been tried on
two of ours....and they still bark and I think that they always will. I
have spent time with Brian Kilcommons, Karen Pryor, Morgan Spector and a
raft of behavorists who agree that sometimes barking can not be stopped.
I do agree it is genetic. So........what is confusing me is that if
all training methods fail.......to WHOM to you rehome the dog? Do you
advertise the dog to potential buyers and "wonderful, friendly, active"
(which these two are) "but barks non stop"? So, who will want that? My
two barkers are neutered.
