It seems to me that the issues being brought up here 
should have been thought through, and resolved *before* 
getting a dog.

No one could seriously imagine that dogs won't bark.  
It's a function of training, to prevent them doing it 
to a point at which it constitutes a nuisance.

I agree with other contributors; debarking (and 
declawing cats) is a totally gratuitous and unnecessary 
surgical practice.  As with all surgical procedures, 
there is a risk to the dog (estimated by some 
veterinarians at as high as 50%) - of infection, 
bleeding, subsequent blockage of the airway by scar 
tissue, or recurrence of the 'problem'.

It is for good reason that both debarking and declawing 
are banned by law in many countries.
