This is so cool! I thought someone would have to
complete the sponsorship form, not just *sign* my
application! Thank you Susan! Here is what the
bylaws say (quoting from the bylaws as posted on
www.ackcsc.org):

"Each applicant for Associate membership shall apply
on a form approved by the Board of Directors and which
shall provide that the applicant agrees to abide by
these constitution and by-laws, and the rules of the
American Kennel Club. The application shall state the
name and address and occupation of the applicant, and
shall carry the signed endorsement of two Regular
Members in good standing. Along with the application,
the prospective member shall submit Associate dues
payment for the current year."

That is *much* less complicated that I thought. There
were several people who emailed me privately
expressing some of the same difficulties that I
*thought* I was having. Now, it seems it was just a
misreading! To those of you out there who have
delayed joining ACKCSC, associate membership sounds
much easier after checking out the details of the
application process as written in the by-laws. I'll
email Judy to make sure. Thanks for clarifying that
for me!!

May I ask two more questions, and then I promise, I'll
*stop*?

1) What is the purpose of limiting how many
applications a regular ACKCSC member may sponsor each
year? By my reading, only a regular member may
sponsor an application for membership, and that
regular member may only sponsor *two* applications per
year (either associate, regular or one of each).
Is/was there a fear that the club would be inundated
with applications causing all kinds of backlog in
processing them? Or is it more an attempt to prevent
any one person from sponsoring new members in the
attempt to build a political coalition of some kind?
Or some other reason that escapes me? (footnote: I
wish someone would write a biographical account of the
formation of this group! It would be a very
interesting read for newcomers like me.)

2) [I promise this is my *last* question on this] The
bylaws state (again quoting from the by-laws as posted
on the website):

"(a) Regular Membership - open to persons aged 18
years or older who are residents of the United States,
in good standing with the American Kennel Club, who
own an AKC-registered Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,
and who display a sincere, continuing interest in
bettering the breed. Regular Members shall be entitled
to all rights and privileges including voting
privileges of the Club."

"(b) Associate Membership - open to persons 18 years
or older who are interested in the Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel and who are in good standing with the
American Kennel Club, but who do not satisfy the
requirements for Regular Membership. Associate Members
shall be entitled to all privileges of the Club except
that they shall not be permitted to vote, hold office,
or be counted in a quorum. "

By my reading, the requirements for regular membership
that are different than those for associate membership
would be owning an AKC-registered cavalier and
displaying a sincere, continuing interest in bettering
the breed. Did I get that right? How many years in
the breed (showing, breeding in line with the codes of
ethics, etc.) would this mean? Would that be past the
five-year drop-out rate? Less than that? More than
that? Is this similar to how other AKC breed clubs
operate? (Oops! That was *six* questions in one!)

I'll stop now. Thank you to those of you who are
helping me out here. I'm learning so much.
