Hello, Winnie,
No, my question was far from sarcastic. I have a real life situation
going on in which a puppy I placed has a medial entropion. The owners
are, for lack of better words, "ga-ga" over their adorable boy. (He is
cute; they take super Christmas photos). They are the best of pet
owners, the best of homes. However, I had to talk them out of an $800.
surgery that they wanted to do on him at 18 months (they would give him
the world) because he had tear staining.

My own opthamologist would LOVE it if we culled from our breeding
program those with dystrophies. Right now the gene pool is such that we
can only work on a few problems at a time without effecting it.
But.......some day.......I hope we'll see a day.......when MVD isn't the
problem it has been......we may want to begin advising the powers that
be that we are ready to cull from breeding (not kill) dogs with
entropion, disticias and dystrophies. I hope I live to see the day.
The point of my post was that each breeder makes choices about what is
important to their breeding program. These are choices made by lots of
study; we immerse ourselves in as much information about as many things
as we can so do. So, at some point if someone asks our opinion on
changing or establishing standards or protocols we have a bank of both
knowledge and experience on which to draw. MOST people who have pets
will not take this time nor do they want to so do. And, these are the
important issues as you have so rightly pointed out. The health of the
dogs and the well being of the breed.
Of course I have learned what I know. And, frankly if you study and
learn what most breeders know, you will have the experience to join and
vote on such issues. But, again.....do you want to do this?

I am a neophyte compared to many on this list who have years more
experience. And, yet *I* would rather that *I* was voting on such
things then the pet owner I sold the pup to who adores her dog, but
isn't going to do much in the way of learning beyond what is wrong with
her own beloved dog.
