I had a post ready to go that said almost the same thing.  That is what I've
been told by several *experts*, including one at Michigan State.  They said
point blank it was a genetic fault that was autoimmune in nature--but that
there are environmental impacts involved as well.

Actually I believe autoimmune disorders are basically genetic in nature but
that environment plays a larger role into whether or not the defect develops
than it does in most other genetic defects.
