Hi Linda, As a buyer of show quality Cavaliers who have been diagnosed with MVD, I am pleased to say that without exception the breeders involved did the "right thing" without hesitation and each had a different remedy.
In every case, I was allowed to keep the Cavalier and make my own decision about her future home (of course, each was spayed.) None were requested to be returned nor did I want to return them. I either rehome a heart patient and do not charge anything for the right home or I keep them here. So "sale" money is not an option. Each breeder offered to replace my Cavalier as soon as a worthy one became available. And this is where the breeders differed because obviously not everyone can instantly or maybe ever again produce a show/breed quality Cavalier. Those who had a replacement available, immediately sent one. I paid only for transportation costs. One who could not replace, because her standards are so high opted to refund my money. With another, I am waiting for a replacement. I know how difficult it is to produce a top quality Cavalier so I am very patient. I have great respect and continued friendships with these breeders because they responded to a difficult situation with integrity and what was best for the dog. I hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2002 8:11 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [CKCS-L] question on warrantees If you sold a pup to a show home with the guarantee of it being "show quality" and "genetically sound" how would you as a breeder handle this scenario? The pup in question at 6 months is diagnosed with a heart murmor, then again at 9 months is examined by ultrasound and mitro valve disease is obviously present grade 2. Then at 1 1/2 years the heart is again ultra sounded and it has progressed to a grade 3. At this point we know it is not a juvenile murmor and is not going away. Now here comes the question... as a breeder would you...? 1.Would you ask this person to place this dog themselves? Then refund them the difference of a pet/show price. 2.Or take it back, and place it yourself refunding their money in whole. 3.Replace it with another prospect and have them keep it but neutered? What if you do not have another prospect? 4. do nothing As we do not have heart trouble as a whole in my other breed, brittanys we're trying to figure out how to word contracts on hearts in cavaliers, knowing what the "masses" do so far as this will be helpful. I feel they should be cut & dried and no "grey" areas as there are so many scenarios what is right? Or do you handle each on an as needed basis? Looking forward to all of your input Linda McCartney-Roy ========================================================= "Magic Commands": to stop receiving mail for awhile, click here and send the email: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20NOMAIL to start it up gain click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20MAIL E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] for assistance.
