<<<<<<<<<I So folks how many here do eye exams on puppies before they leave for their new homes. Do you do all the litter, or just the show prospects? How much has this helped your breeding programs? What other pre purchase testing is done. I know many in the US can and do administer their own innoculations. >>>>>>>>
In Australia the law dictates that vaccinations must be administered by vets. My pups are vaccinated at 6 and again at 12 weeks (those still with me!) They get complete check by the vet at these times. Each litter has ophthalmologist eye exam at 8-9 weeks - all pups not just the ones I am keeping. I can't see the point of only doing the potential show and breeding stock - if you are going to screen, surely screening the entire litter makes more sense to find out if any of the pups have a problem and what genes they may carry.. I certainly wouldn't want a pet to go off to its new home if it had a problem that could have been picked up early. As I don't seem to have had eye problems over many years, it remains to be seen whether the screening of litters will make any difference to my breeding program long term! BTW the last litter I had done cost nearly $200 for the eye exam! Another expensive way of gaining peace of mind about ones pups!
