I live within 20 minutes of two ophthalmologists, so I have all puppies
checked before they go to their new homes. I even check the ones I'm not
keeping, because it is only $11 per additional pup, and it might give me
information about what genes my "keeper" pups may carry. In a recessive
condition, such as retinal folds, only about 1/4 of the pups will be
affected, but 3/4 of the pups will carry the genes. I also picked up a
more severe eye condition in one eight-week-old pup this way, in a pup that
was going to go back to the stud owner. This saved us shipping the pup only
to find out later that it wouldn't be useful in a breeding program. I
placed the pup at a very reduced cost with someone who loves it very much.

I give DHPP (distemper-hepatitis-parvo-parainfluenza) at 8,12 & 16 weeks. I
let the new owners take the pup to the vet for rabies whenever possible.
The puppy gets one general veterinary exam (sometimes two, if a health cert
is required within 10 days of shipping) before it goes to its new home.
