You may have *assumed* it because I said something about people testing
whole litters of puppies for RD but almost totally ignoring testing for HD.
My wording wasn't quite that good the first time around and could have been
mistaken for something different.

If I had the ability to test all puppies for RD I would do so. I think it
is good to be able to do that and do it every time I possibly can. I am
sure if I lived near a vet school I would test all my puppies. But I do
find it a bit strange realizing there are certain breeders who test every
puppy in every litter for RD but do no testing of hips whatsoever--and there
ARE some breeders who do this. In my own opinion that protocol seems out of
balance with the reality of what is happening in Cavaliers today and the
effect it could have on the puppies. Cavaliers do have a higher incidence
of hip dysplasia that I am comfortable with for a small breed so I feel they
should be officially tested for HD. I also believe there are more Cavaliers
suffering in pain from hip dysplasia than there are Cavaliers that go blind
from RD. I personally know of several Cavaliers who had hip surgery and
several others in pain from HD whereas the one Leanne mentioned that went
blind from RD is the very FIRST time I've heard this in 27 years. It is not
even mentioned on any of the sites I've read. In fact every ophthalmologist
I've talked to and everything I've read has said Cavaliers have the type of
RD which doesn't lead to blindness. From what I have read here, it does
happen but it is VERY rare--much less prevalent than pain from HD even less
prevalent than surgery for HD.
