Suze, I am talking about the incidence breedwide of HD. I am not talking about the percentage of Cavaliers that were tested and diagnosed to have HD for the OFA. This is what I think is the overall incidence. A geneticist does this sort of numbers projection by using the Hardy-Weinberg Principle and other considerations like the fact that breeders will not send in the x-rays of obviously dysplasic dogs for evaluation so there is a certain percentage of HD (usually most of the moderate and all of the severely affected) that must be factored in for that.
Also, the dogs that are considered HD are the ones that would not test to either Fair, Good, or Excellent-- in other words, everything rated less than "Fair". Anything that would not get the hip certificate. After I adjusted the numbers for these and other aspects, I came to the estimate of 30% of the breed. "The breed" means ALL Cavaliers everywhere. Now, this is my opinion. Others may think differently. However, I have held this opinion for many years and haven't seen anything yet that changes my mind. The thing that really impresses me is that selection pressure is highly effective against HD. This is the reason that we do pre-lims on our dogs. I occasionally do the permanent x-ray. It depends on what the pre-lim grade was and whether the dog has made a major contribution to my line. All the best, Susan Cochran ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan A.
