<<<<< I'm curious to know what breed has improved with selection pressure in terms of HD? Last I>>>> Hi Suze, My own vet here Dr Robert Zammit is a breeder of GSDs. He was involved with the adoption of the BVA/AVA hip scoring scheme as it applies to GSDs here - (sires and dams are required to be hip scored and elbow x-rayed before progeny can be registered here in this and some other breeds) Robert says that you can definitely improve on hips if you score all your breeding stock and gradually eliminate the highest scoring dogs from the breeding program over a period of time - I'm not talking one year here but say a ten - 15 year period. And I am not talking OFA but the scoring system that we use here. BUT all this goes out the window if you outcross with unknown hip status or if the hip results have been faked. He personally knows of a GSD that came here with hips done in Germany with 0:0 hip score (perfect) and was so bad when it arrived in quarantine that it was put down immediately - so you simply can't trust some results!!!! I am NOT saying this is widespread or applies to Cavaliers but its something to bear in mind. Also bear in mind that he is a highly experienced vet in this field and being in Australia, sees many, many Cavaliers and it is his opinion that hips are a low priority for Cavaliers compared with the heart problems in the breed.
