Martin:

You can't stand up in a K25.....adequate head room to sit in the cabin.

The k25's were built by Mirage yachts.....Mirage wanted a boat to compete with the J24's and Bruce Kirby just happened to have a 25 footer on the drawing board. We did really well against the J24 fleet here, however, the J24's would always out sail us in heavier air. Don't know if that was the boat or us. The K25 is like a big Laser and wants to be sailed flat. Many days we sailed with 3 crew but 5 seemed to be what she needed.

My biggest complaint about the K25 was that it has 'running backs' and they are critical to sail trim. We only used the back stay in heavy air going to weather to flatten the main.....other than that, it always stayed loose. We were told that, and other things, by the guys we bought her from. As I said in an earlier post, these guys were the best in the K25 fleet and what they passed on to us, cut at least 3 years of 'on the water learning'.

Here's an example,.....we were doing a Wednesday night around the cans race....a J24 was riding our stern wake on a close reach.....unbeknownst to me one of the crew had applied the back stay.....when I noticed it and fully released it, we just slowly sailed away from the J24. After the race, the J24 skipper asked us what happened.....he said it was like we had another gear that he didn't have.....told him I released the back stay which shouldn't have been on in the first place.....not sure if he believed me!

Be careful choosing a K25......one of their biggest problems is a soft keel sump.....it is easy to spot as the keel bolts disappear into the wet, rotten sump.

Rob,

I had noticed that 37R in Halifax and wondered why it has been on the market so long. If I did not already own a 43 the 37R would fit my current sailing plans better than the 43. Now I'm starting to think a Kirby 25 would be interesting in the light air PNW summer. How's the head room?

Hi Martin:

I was on the helm of the K25 downwind that day.....we were not in the same PHRF fleet but we had a 5 mile downwind leg where the 37R started just behind us (2 to 3 boats lengths) and after the leg it was maybe abeam of us.....we were not "hitch'n a ride' on his stern wave, he might have doing that to us.....go figure, it happened...... know it was embarrassing for the 37R crew......the boat was always well sailed....it is for sale....

Check its race record in the advertisement......it was always a competitively sailed boat.....not like them to give anything away to any boat on the race course.

Going up wind against the 37R in 8 to 10 knts apparent was doable.....higher than that, we were toast....did it make any sense, NO!

I got another story......we were racing on a 1985 C&C 33 MK II.....well crewed boat, trust me......long up wind leg at about a 17 to 20 knts true.....a J24 stayed with us all the way to the windward mark.....one would think that should not have happened, but it did. We have a very competitive J24 fleet here.

Raced on a 34R.....a Hobbie 33 would kick our behinds downwind.....in anything over 12 to 15 knts true, we would take it all back and more on the the upwind legs.

Like I said earlier, racing is 50% boat, 50% crew and 50% luck......I'll take 50% luck any day!

There is no 'excuse racing' than 'match boat racing'.....no excuses....boat for boat, crew for crew.

Dwight,

How did the Kirby 25 do against the 37R upwind, and was the 37R well sailed in general?

Was the Kirby "hitch'n a ride" on the 37's stern wave?

Best regards,

Martin
