During the floods of 93 here in Iowa, I worked for a company that had all of their scheduling and accounting equipment end up underwater. People had backups of their hard drives, but of course, they kept the disks in their desks. This didn't really help when the water was pushing 5' high in their offices. My roommate and I worked as general laborers for this company, but we also were called on to do computer work, since one of our bosses knew that we were capable of doing the work. Over the next week, we manually cleaned and rinsed close to 200 floppy disks so that we could retrieve the data off of them.
We popped the disks out, rinsed them under water to get all of the surface dirt off. Cleaned them with soap and warm water, rubbed them down with denatured or isopropyl alcohol, and then evaporated the alcohol with a hair dryer. We then put the disk media into one of about 5 clean 3.5" disk cases we had, taped it shut, put it in a drive and read the data off. We also resurrected a number of machines up by pulling them apart, cleaning them with water, alcohol, and a toilet brush, and putting them back together. It was truly a special time, since we could stay relatively clean, while the rest of our co-workers were coming out covered up in mud and slime clear up to their necks.
