Actually, I wrap a head of letece in paper towels and then slip it into a plastic grocery bag. This seems to work pretty well for me, but, of course, there is always the question of whether there are dark spots later. I think your problem is with the plastic bag.  Just wrap in paper towel
and check everything so if the towel needs changing if something spills on
it in the refrigerator you'll know it.
