I appreciate all of the tips; also got that tip years ago from a Tupperware
lady; always slam it on the countertop to remove its core.

Let two! grins! grow! where one! grouch! was before!

With a new head of lettuce I remove the core by hitting it on the side of
the countertop, then rip out the core. I then peel off a few lettuce leaves
then put the lettuce in a new freezer bag before putting it in the fridge.
Then I just wash the leaves as needed. With the core gone the lettuce stays
fresher and brown spot free longer. I don't use a knife to remove the core
as it turns the lettuce brown. HTH
