Jennifer,
You did exactly the right thing by just leaving the door closed and letting
the fire go out. In this case, this was not due to foil in the broiler. It
is just fact that there is some potential for grease to catch fire and can
happen with or without foil. If we use leaner cuts of meat, it is less apt
to happen and happens very rarely. It has happened to my Mother and to my
younger brother. But, that is over many many years of cooking. Any of us can
have a kitchen fire. All we can do sighted or blind is know how to safely
handle it and have the sense to be aware and careful and if it ever happens,
get help. I had a Fire Inspector tell a group I was in that in the event of
a kitchen fire, call the fire department and get out. He'd rather come to a
unnecessary call than to find one of us seriously injured trying to put out
a fire that was to much to handle by the general public. This was his advice
to sighted people, not just vision impaired people.

Subject: Re: [CnD] Foil in oven
Mary, I've been using foil-lined baking pans for over forty years, and
the only time I've ever had a problem was when I used foil in the
broiler, and the grease from the meat caught on fire. I simply turned
off the oven and did not open the door until the fire went out. If
you leave the door closed, the fire is deprived of oxygen and it will
go out on its own. I've been too afraid to use the broiler since
then, <smile>, but I have absolutely no problem with foil in baking
pans.

Hi,
I'm curious, have any of you had problems when using a baking pan with
foil
to bake things in the conventional oven? I have never had any problems
with
it, though I have a friend who says that nobody should bake things in the
oven using foil because it can be a fire hazard. I don't know what to
believe, because I've never had issues. Please share your feedback.
