I suspect most on this list are all too aware that people are dying -- it's that
awareness that put us on the road to being on this list. My response came from
two directions. One was irritation at an objection to talk in a context (a
maillist) where nothing but talk can happen. A desire to stop talk in that
context only makes sense as a desire to close the list. The other was
remembrance of all the times in the '60s and '70s where action was in fact
sabotaged by those who could only prate "Let's do something," thereby preventing
the group from achieving any coherence in its  action. The local SDS chapter was
essentially destroyed and local anti-war activity brought to an end by those
whose slogan was Stop Talking and Act. The result was the stopping of *both*
talking and action.

My wife and I revived activity to some limited extent by forming a group with
its first principle of unity being that no one would say, "Let's Do Something."
We eventually did a good deal -- but only because from the beginning we squashed
the the "Let's-Do-Something" virus.
