Nestor, we are in agreement. I believe that the misunderstanding came from
me disagreeing with Tony about lumping East Timor in with Kosovo and
Chechnya. The East Timorese had fought for 24yrs to break free of the
repressive Indonesian military, the Indonesian military invaded East Timor
with the approval of the U.S and Australia, and used their weapons to do it.
What I believe happened last year was that because of the timing of the
independence vote and the brutal slaughter that ensued, the U.S was forced
[albeit very slowly and half heartedly] to tell the Indonesians to stop.
When Australia came in because of public pressure at home, that essentially
forced the U.S to stick with this new position. The East Timorese freed
themselves they could have done so without so much pain if the U.S had just
told Jakarta that the game was up. I would never ever support U.S
intervention anywhere in the world in the name of humanitarianism, half of
the worlds current bloodshed is funded and tacitly supported by the U.S.
Under some circumstances I would support a UN protectorate force but only if
it was not under the command of any U.S, French, British, German, Russian,
or Canadian forces.
So that's where I stand.... I think.
Aaron.
