It was precisely because of the independant route that Yugoslavia went- building
their own socialism, and no thanks to the USSR- that allowed Yugo to last as long as
she did. It was the reason that so many foul things had to be meted out to the SFRY-
the people there would not voluntarily surrender the state they had built, despite
being outside the loop. That "wedge" has also been led by Fidel Castro many times
over, and is a generally anti-imperialist force historically. The Non-aligned
movement was always tarred as "Soviet-led" anyways- what it achieved outside the
Soviet Bloc gave socialist patriots a reason to look to it with pride.
