I don't believe this is true. Now I suppose we shall have to redebate Titoism,
the Serbs, the Albanians after 1941, the crimes of the Croatians, the Partisan
Nation etc etc. I doubt if I shall, frankly. The unfortunate truth is that
almost without exception, the leaders of revolutuions and wars of national
liberation in the first half of the 20th century, ended up putting the vanity
of personal power, and similar things, above the need for unity. The worst
example of all, of course, was set by Khrushchev when he started the split
with China after 1958. THAT was the moment when the writing first began to
appear on the wall, and it began to be clear that socialism would be
destroyed. Tito's offence is easier to ignore because the Balkans is not
exactly Russia or China. Doesn't make it less real, though.

Yugoslavia's 'independent' route was the product of a profoundly cynical
calculation. It was an *unforced* error.
