How about an even more straightforward approach with a butcher spell? It's
just more thematic to have Ash gift you with a book (knowledge), than an
invocation to butcher corpses. And the result is the same. The spell can be
available to others, it would just be worthless to them.

What about magical staves? Not being able to switch forces you to choose if
you focus on fighting or magic (with enhancer, power, energy or
channelling). It makes the conduct more relevant. For now, people uncurse
their weapon mid-game, and not just because of butchering. If we can tempt
them into not doing it, by making fully bounded more powerful and leave
access to butchering, we've won.
