This is the line my ISP gave me. Robert, I just don't think it is worth getting worked up over. The help they hire has to be able to handle the "usual" customer complaints and problems. The other reason given is that "there are so many distributions with their own quirks that they just can't adequately serve a linux user". ----- Please don't flame me! ---------- --------- I am only repeating the spineless excuses given to me! -------
I agree with the reasoning 100%. But that doesn't mean I have to accept their answers. Nor does it mean that we as part of the OpenSource community can't help each other get Linux working even though paid vendors refuse. Besides, once we do, the process of getting things to work with Linux makes a nice letter to their management, the local tech journals, and for the CWELUG webpage.
My problem was associated with whether I was getting an IP address by DHCP or not.
Trisa, did you set up your computer to accept an IP by DHCP (automatically)? Also, in your instructions from your ISP did you get a piece of paper with your login ID and a password? If you did, is there also a number like 127.0.0.1 (the numbers should be very different but 4 sets of numbers separated by ".") on the paper?
Since your ISP can "see" your NIC, maybe it is the interface settings that are incorrect. What does the list say?
Your right on. The issue is with DHCP since her eth0 interface didn't show an IP. Personally, I would boot with Knoppix from the CD, because:
1) we can all easily get and run Knoppix without mucking up our existing linux setup (this is your point about consistency of a linux environment.)
2) Knoppix uses DHCP by default to setup its networking
3) it comes with the Mozilla browser.
