Ok, an update. One thing I hadn't done, and I don't think I mentioned
it here yet - was I forgot to make sure eth0 was started up (it was shut
off at one time). I did

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start

and got

* Bringing eth0 up...
* eth0 dhcp [ ok ]
* eth0 received address 192.168.1.20

But still can't connect to anything. Firefox tries, then says it can't
find the url. (Before it would pop up right away with that message.)

Someone else suggested the IP 192.168.1.20 looks more like one from a
router (but I'm not using mine yet). I don't know anything about that
myself.

After I tried that I tried dialing back in and couldn't. I ended up
having to do /etc/init.d/net.eth0 stop before I was able to dial back in
successfully.

Maybe with eth0 back on, I should try some of the commands you suggested
earlier again?
