A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's reading from the first letter of Peter we hear some
astoundingly good advice. It is precise, firm, yet surprisingly gentle.
It reverberates like the words of Peter's successor, our own Pope John
Paul II and the evangelical words of all who submit their will and
talent to the Holy Spirit.

Peter says that we should bow humbly under God's mighty hand, so that in
due time He may lift us up. And, that we should cast all our cares on
Him, because He cares for us. In these two statements we find a formula
for coping with all the unexpected hardships, tragedies, frustrations
and difficulties of our lives.

We are encouraged to be humble which simply means that we recognize who
we are and what we can do (or is it better stated, what we cannot do?)
and what God can do. With this orientation we begin to recognize that
all our hope lies in God and not in our own ingenuity and cleverness. It
acknowledges not only God's power, but His love and mercy.

Bowing humbly before God is not a one-time event, but an attitude of
being. It requires God's grace and our determination to cooperate with
Him even though the way is often dark and uncertain.

Seeing us totally dependent the Lord's heart is moved with compassion
for His poor little creature who trustingly cries out to Him in need.
Let us praise Him, love Him, joyfully serve Him!

              Lord, I am nothing
                   except that You,
                   who are Everything, love me.
                   Alleluia!
