From a photographer and non tech point of view I see Marie-Noëlle
points valid in this discussion. But for me this discussion uncovers a
bigger problem with
darktable in the long run. Darktable is the most feature rich raw
processing tool I know except of ACDsee. I have tested a lot of
commercial raw processing
softwares over the years and most of them don't compare to Darktable.
Even Lightroom development module is soon to be less feature rich.
For me I can get used to how the tools are applied, but I Darktable is
now so feature rich that I also spend some wasted time scrolling for the
right
module even after knowing this software for two years. Darktable will
not be less feature rich over the years and the complexity will increase.
What you can do is in the future version of Darktable to merge several
modules. Rawtherapee have solved this by creating a basic module which you
see first and have the more advanced modules below. Exposure, highlight,
shadows, fill light can be put into one module. The same may apply to
the modules affecting saturation, velvia and vibrance. But I know that
today with the possibility to add several instances and masks it would
be simpler
to keep them in seperate modules. But somehow I feel that Marie-Noëlle
point must be addressed at some point if Darktable should be more attractive
to the more creative photographer type of person. How can this be
achieved? What do the developers of the project feels?
Rawtherapee interface have done a great job of keeping everything
simple. But Darktable solution to multiple instances and masks is very
elegant and
suits the style of the program.
I have a suggestion and that is to make a style preview gallery with
small thumbnails in a grid which show how the picture can look in every
style installed.
This can make it more easy for the more creative people to approach
Darktable, find and refine the right "look". This can be done in the
Lightable with a
"preview styles" button under the style menu.
And I also suggest that all the styles which are being made for
Darktable is made available in the releases of the software. Every style
should be marked with
author, copyright and version. I is one person who can find some spare
time rearranging them.

I don't see a reason for the order of the modules to be inverted;
if one wants to ensure users know the order of the application of
modules, they can be arranged in the same order in which they are
applied, instead of the other way around.
they are...
they are arranged bottom to top, in the order they are applied.
When I first used DT and saw a favourties tab, I immediately
wanted to add the modules I would use into favourites. WB,
exposure, spot removal, lens correction, GND, denoise, crop,
vibrance, tonemap, shadows/highlights, local contrast, colour
zones, monochrome, tone curve, sharpen, and vignetting. With the
exception of a few, they now appear in the inverse order that I
would use them. Vignetting and sharpening are right up top, with
exposure and WB right at the bottom. I didn't expect this
behaviour; I always work from top to bottom and not the other way
round.
so, IIUC after this discussion, your suggestion is now to arrange
modules in the order they are applied top to bottom instead of bottom
to top...
At this point I don't disagree with the feature request per-se, but I
don't think it's worth the UI breakage. You are more or less the first
person I see complaining about that, so I assume people get used to it
quickly/don't mind.
It might be a case of "nobody complained about it, but it's because
they never realized how annoying it is" maybe... we will see if people
start massively replying on this thread, but I would be suprised.
overall, I don't think it's worth breaking everybody's workflow for this.
