I had a few cases where Nikon own raw editing tool corrupted Nikon raw files by
modifying them directly. Luckily I had backups of the files, but still it
sucked badly. I agree that it is a very good idea never ever modify the
original raw files.

What about Canon CR2 images edited by DPP (Canon's own software)?
I often have to use DPP (in vmware and Win 7) to view the focus points
used by the camera to try to understand where/how I screwed up. I
usually try not to edit but they've been occasions where I forget or get
carried...
