I classify mine the same way but I don't use downloader software. I pop the memory card out of the camera, put it in a USB adapter, plug the USB adapter into the computer. Up pops a file manager. I drag-n-drop to the INCOMING folder on the computer. I then run 'exiftool': exiftool '-Directory<DateTimeOriginal' -d %Y/%m/%d INCOMING A few points here. 1. Copying from the card is FAST! This works at full USB speeds No special software is needed over and above the basic operating system 2. Exiftool is fantastic! The example I give above is just for classification, but you can do that by renaming the files. I have a script that also updates the exif information in each photo with my name and copyright. Another script prompts me for 'tags' that can be applied. 3. Having this information in exif makes it available to all and any photo tool, not just darktable. While it may seem that DT doesn't do much with exif, in reality it does, but mostly with export. Yes it would be nice to have DT be able to both edit and use the exif information.
