Where are you getting the £300 increase from? CF7 when launched was around
the £3500 mark. I can't find any official pages to confirm this though.

One thing to bare in mind is that whilst the US see a $2,500 price
increase for Enterprise, here in the UK we are only seeing a £300
increase.

Additionally, bare in mind one of the reasons the UK is complaining so
much right now is because the Pound is absolutely stomping on the
Dollar. If the exchange rate was more favourable to the Dollar we
wouldn't be seeing anywhere near as many complaints.

Going back to 2002, the exchange rater was around $1.34 to the Pound
(compared to $2.02 right now). That equates to a big difference in
pricing outside of the US.

Am I defending Adobe over this? Yes and no.

Yes, because the exchange rate is one of the major forces behind why
there is such a price differential, however I agree that they should be
doing something to help ease this ...

... maybe the fact that here in the UK we have only seen a £300 increase
on Enterprise compared to $2,500 in the US is Adobe being nice?

Additionally, can you really complain about paying £4k-ish for
ENTERPRISE level software. Go get a quote for Websphere or Weblogic ,
then factor in how much time it would take you to code something like
<cfexchange> and tell me that ColdFusion Enterprise isn't a bargain.
Seriously.

Also, if you don't need the clustering, fail over and high performance
features of Enterprise then use Standard. Just about every feature of
Enterprise is now in Standard, including gateways, yet it's price hasn't
changed. OK, you may not get Server Monitoring, but go spend a couple of
hundred quid on Fusion Reactor and you're sorted.

Come on folks we need to remember that ColdFusion isn't *just* a
programming language; there's way much more to it than that. Seriously,
go write some code to connect to Microsoft Exchange to integrate with
your inbox, calendar, contacts and task list then come back and talk to
me about costs.

On a different note, in regards subscriptions ... if you get no joy with
Customer Service here in the UK (who are still goddam abysmal) give me a
shout offline and I'll get you sorted by someone at Adobe who does know
what they are doing.

The good news is that CF8 has launched (I like the Tim Buntel demos) but
the
price has been hiked - the opposite to what many people were hoping.
Enterprise is $7499 (£3750) from the US Adobe store and a whopping
£4539+VAT
from the UK store.

CF7 was $5999 so that's a $1500 hike. The new features are great but the
price is even more of a deterrent for developers and clients to take to
CF,
and also for existing users who want to add more servers. In recent
months
BlueDragon have made their license much cheaper in some configurations
and I
heard they can offer SPLA for hosting services (pay as you go).

To put it in perspective you can buy *FOUR* brand new dual core, 2Gb,
RAID1
servers with Windows Server 2003 licenses running .NET for the price of
1
CF8 license.

Anyhue, apologies for using this mailing list as a blog but I do have a
question. I took out a subscription with CF7 but I don't know how to use
it
to upgrade to CF8. Would my license key simply be accepted by CF8 or do
I
need to contact Adobe Sales for a new license key?

Thanks,
Gary F.
