But that isn't the most important thing. Writing code that works is the main task (imho). Being able to write code that works AND does the above is top quality code. ;) > Mostly, when hiring we look for other Important skills, which > any person off the street could not pick up easily (& > therefore blag an interview) such as Java, OOP, Unix (simple > tasks), SQL. I do agree with this... However, I remember going for interview and being asked a completely silly Javascript question. Something about clearing an array to reuse it (although tbh I couldn't see any reason to do this in the example they gave). I understood the question, knew the answer and gave it. They then went on to explain how wrong I was! I went back after the interview, checked up on websites/books etc. Found I was right and they were wrong. I was offered the contract with them, and decided not to take it. Why? Because if they couldn't ask the right questions, it was going to be a nightmare working environment. Moral of the story: If you ask a question at interview MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE ANSWER FIRST! It doesn't help when the interviewee is much better at the job than the interviewer. > These skills tend to separate the coders that have picked up > CFM as they go along & those who are true professional coders. Quite agree. There aren't enough true professional coders out there!
