Hi
I'd like to see if people are interested in adding a new tab to
the homepage:
>Developers<
it could point directly to the main developer wiki page plus also
have links for *bug reporting and bug reports.*
Louis et al--
I think this might be useful, but why not retool the actual
development site itself to make it a bit more functional/usable?
http://development.openoffice.org/
a) it's a pain to maintain as a rich information system; wiki is easier.
b) the issue is adding a tab, not updating the Development page.
see below for more...
The pro argument includes:
* makes it easier for developers. Right now the "contributing" tab
is ambiguous, as it must be--it's comprehensive. Further, Mozilla
has "developers" and in the interest of a common language, it
would help.
well it IS somewhat ambiguous but this page clearly has a
Programming link-- and *that* is very straightforward. The main
problem area from my point of view is what happens AFTER this, the
development page.
I think having yet another Development type link will only make
things more confusing/ambiguous from a navigational standpoint.
Retooling the main Development page seems more worthwhile to me. I
think one of the development project leads even responded to my
comments about this some time back, but nothing has been done. :(
Why will it make it more confusing? it will call out to developers.
I'd also, along these lines, like to eliminate "My pages" from the
homepage, unless one is logged in.
Re-tooling a dying page is going to be fruitless as long as an easier
equivalent exists ;-)
We can also re-name "contributing", though no good alternatives come
to mind. Which suggests that instead of "Contributing" perhaps call
it "Development" . I may anyway dive in and rename the QA link in
Contributing tab to include "Bugs, Issues, " thus, Bugs, Issues,
Tests: Quality Assurance"
(/me is acutely aware that we've discussed this ad nauseum before,
but lsp has a strong stomach :-)
I DO think that as the wiki encompasses more than just development
issues, that the wiki itself should be linked from the home page
with some VERY clear explanation of what its use is, however.
The con argument includes:
* makes it confusing, as "contributing" already exists, even
though we'd remove "programming" if we have 'developers'.
yes!
The basic assumption is that all or virtually all users hitting
the homepage are endusers and not developers.
well but it serves many purposes as we've discussed before. If I
were a "developer", I wouldn't have a problem figuring out
Contributing is where I need to go.
Most don't; it's the few that do who contact me that makes me raise
this. That and the fact that as I've been going around the world
presenting to developers and other contributors, I've noted that it
would just be easier if there were a clear link on the homepage for
developers. I no longer refer to the development page as such b/c the
wikis have taken precedence.
And really, the *immediate* prompt has been those wanting to file
bugs or see bug reports. They don't understand that "Contributing"
includes those.
Cheers,
louis
