Maybe the British "freehold" concept would be a little of an accurate

No, he's saying that none of us (RSP's, resellers, registrars) own 
the domain name, but the REGISTRY owns the domain name. (Were this 
NOT the case, ICANN/WIPO would have no grounds/jurisdiction over the 
domain-names themselves, as they would be SOMEONE's "property".
