"Let it expire" may seem to be an adequate (and easy) solution from your perspective, but it ignores the fact that some of your customers want the feature (a feature that is available from your competitors). Each time you are unresponsive to the needs of your customers, you lose a little.
There are lots of good reasons a registrant may want to cut a domain name loose immediately (such as discovering it infringes the trademark of a litigious company).
