I agree completely that more often than not, the "value" of certs in the eyes
of actual sysadmin-types-managers isn't really all that great, IF as has been
mentioned, the candidate(s) have requisite experience. And yes, certs are
definitely much more meaningful for entry-level positions.
In my personal opinion, a really good resume shows the real experience that the
person possesses, and perhaps listing the certs at the end is a bonus ("I not
only know what I'm doing, but these tests can also confirm it...").
Listing the certs FIRST as the means of experience would make me nervous.
However, I disagree with the opinion that someone considered spending $ on the
cert as "wasted" - the reality is, more times than not something like this
accomplishes getting you past/through the "HR firewall". If having that cert
gets you past HR and into the desk of the hiring manager- then I'd consider it
"mission accomplished"....
