I guess I'm not seeing this... We have had applicants write, I don't know anything about Unix System Administration, but I hear its a good job and I want to learn it.
Or I don't have 4 years work experience, how can I get 4 years work experience in the next 1.5 years before I graduate? Back when I applied in 2006, the position read Bachelors degree in Computer related field or equivalent experience. And, 4 years work experience. It was decided that equivalent experience is 4 years.....and then it got fuzzy on whether that means the same 4 years or an additional 4 years. And, in the end the degree requirement was dropped (except that in the recent round, HR said an education requirement is required...so somebody scribbled down associates degree or equivalent experience on the ad.) Our recent hire...there was discussion on whether he met the 4 year experience, since it was the 4 years that he had worked for us as a student....(and students don't get root or such access...though we had been giving him full sudo here and there....though the search committee didn't know this.) I've wondered how other higher ed searches are done. The committee, get's a representative from various departments (some of which will have nothing to do with the person, but think they do) The manager is not involved.... At the end of the search, they hire the person and then the manager finds out. Except they changed the last part recently...so the manager gets to have lunch with candidate, and has final say on the hiring recommendations from the search committee. On account that a few years ago, they did a search for a Network Analyst....and first day he shows up to work, and find out the manager is his wife's cousin. They don't allow this...so they had to find somewhere else to put him. (though the husband of the niece of the Provost used to be our Assistant Director....but there's enough levels that that is ok... plus the Director did it as a favor to the Provost....) ----- Original Message ----- > In my opinion a lot of Jr people don't apply because they feel > intimidated by the advert. > I have sent job openings to people and was told, "i don't think i > qualify", to which my answer > is usually, "try and see".
