Hi Harry,

I too am a PC user, and it does take a little while to get used to the way JFW and Voice Over work. So give yourself that time. Please don't feel I'm patronising you, but i have also hadd a few of your annoyances during my first days with Voice Over.

Okay let's see what we can do.

Well i think one of your questions was how to get the VO and active cursorsto follow each other. If you go to the VO preferenes by pressing command option and f8, go to the navigation pannel and if you read the page you will find various check boxes related to the various . cursors. I have all of these boxes checked, so that all the cursors follow one another. VO's behaviour is affected in various ways if you check difrent boxes.

I think you also wanted to know how to close a document. Well i assume you want to be able to shut down the computer so after you've finished typing in your document, you would press command q an you would be put into a dialog box. If you explore the box, you'll find various buttons. Don't save, cancel overwrite and save with a new name. use the VO keys with the arrow keys to navigate to the button you want and then use VO keys and space to click the button.

With regard to your last question, I think I'll let someone else anser this, as I too find it difficult sometimes to edit, although it does get easier every time i do it. But i think the thing to remember is that if you are deleting certain letters, the cursor needs to be after the letter you want to delete. I think JFW works differntly, but as I say others on this list may be better at answering this particular question.

Subject: TextEdit and Vo

I changed the subject line to reflect the topic under discussion. I certainly need help in using VO with TextEdit. I have trouble editing with VO, and it seems like the VO cursor is in one place and the active cursor is in another. What is the command to tether the active cursor with the VO cursor? Also when I try to shut down the computer, I am informed that the open TextEdit program is preventing the shutdown. I am asked if I would like to save the changes to the document, and what is the command to say yes or no? I am afraid my JAWS and PC habits are interfeering here, since in a PC document all I have to do is press the "y" for yes and the "n" key for no, then the document closes. What is the command to close an open TE document? The command+q does not seem to be working for me. When editing for instance removing the 2 between 123, Which number do I focus on? Do I focus on the 1, or the 3? In a PC document with jaws I always focus on the 2 and press the delete key, and the 2 is removed. Also if I wanted to insert a 2 between the numbers of 13 all I had to do is focus on the 3 and press the 2 and the number is always inserted to the left of the character which has focus. So far, the inability for me to edit text in a TE document with consistency is driving me crazy. It seems that reading the keyboard commands and trying to edit is not working out. I need to be spoon fed one spoonfull at a time. Thanks for your help in this matter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Howell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "General discussions on all topics relating to the use of Mac OS X by theblind" <[email protected]>

Subject: Re: iTunes' Inaccessibility and VoiceOver

As an aside, but yet related to this topic, I've noticed a very annoying behavior with Text Edit lately that I can't quite figure out how to really reproduce consistantly. Basically if I'm editing a text document, I switch to lets say Mail and come back later to Text Edit, the arrow keys will not read the text any longer. Its almost as though the Edit area is locked from me reading it with the regular cursor, but yet I can read it fine by navigating it with VO. It actually appears as though its locked as I can't seem to edit anything. Only quiting Text Edit resolve the problem. No matter if I bring the cursors together or turn VO on/off has no affect. Has anyone else noticed this?

tnx
