adding a program to the doc

Hi all. Well, I would like to do something that I just can't figure  
out. How do I add an application to the dock? In particular, I would  
like to add skype to the dock, I use it frequently, and could save a  
few steps by avoiding the applications folder each time. Do I need to  
make an alius first? Do I need to drag and drop to get it to the dock?  
Help appriciated.
