First, glad to hear you've broken away from the ripoff dealer! Second, you cannot, repeat *CANNOT* hurt a transmission any worse than it already has been by properly maintaining it now. That is a shopworn myth that's only "proven" when a transmission that was on its last legs anyway gives up the ghost shortly after being maintained. I would avoid "flushes" myself, but if done properly they probably won't hurt. Properly means with the correct fluid. See below.
The absolute KEY thing with these transmissions is to use the correct, Mopar-designated ATF+4 fluid. Not some other fluid with an add-on that "makes it the same". It doesn't. Insist on ONLY ATF+4, and if they give you a hard time, take it someplace else. If you accept ANY substitute, you will be in for an expensive rebuild in short order. Also: insist: NO transmission additives. None. Zilch. If they put it in and tell you about it later, make them drain it out and put in fresh ATF+4. If the shop you want to take it to does not have the proper fluid, ask them if they will install fluid that you bring to them. You'll want to bring 8 quarts of ATF+4. You may have a quart or two left over when they're done. Walmart sells a house brand, as well as a name brand; they're equivalent. I'm using the house brand in my Jeep's expensive 45RFE transmission right now with no problems. Avoid Aamsoil. I strongly recommend, however, that you get a Mopar brand transmission filter. Available at any dealer and not terribly expensive. Your transmission doesn't have adjustable bands. Even if it did, transmission bands are not normally replaced unless the transmission is being overhauled. They're adjusted. "Slipping" is a serious condition. You press on the accelerator and the engine revs, but the car doesn't move as quickly as it should. It doesn't sound exactly like what you're describing, though. Your transmission is controlled via electronic solenoids. It is possible that dirty, worn fluid has caused them to malfunction. A fluid change and fresh filter may very well be the only cure it needs. It is certainly a reasonable thing to hope for. Do it soon, because things will get worse quickly if the problem is fluid related, and they'll be expensive if they do. Good luck!
