I have used transverters as well and I have at least 2 223 mhz radios (handheld and mobile). But neither does D-STAR and the general population wants a self-contained simple radio to put on their belt or in their car/truck without extra boxes or having to do the math to figure out what frequency they are really on through the transverter. Yes we can get to other bands, but to have a critical mass, you need COTS (commercial off the shelf) radios.
