But, shouldn't your beef be with the freighting company?  Did you ask them
to send it back to you insured?  Or did you assume?  The common sense
thing works both ways.  I like you feel that common sense is key in this
world, but, I do realize that most people don't have it.  Now me, I always
request insured shipping, but in most places it is an option that you have
to ask for.
