Call me a nitpicker, but it seems to me you can't get the data to re-key it
unless your source IS someone who has obtained the data with the right to
redistribute in some form or another.
Some day I will get into the total absurdity of ANSI labelling its X12
format a "standard" but then not making the information available to the
public at large for no charge or only reproduction costs... or worse yet,
making the only official copyrightable ("fixed in tangible media") versions
available from exactly ONE (1) source (DISA). Talk about potential for
monopolisitic abuse! (c.f., Washington Publishing Co's actions vis-a-vis the
X12N healthcare transaction implementation guides... hundreds of dollars
they want to download the same PDF file which was available for the cost of
the download (nothing) when first released).
I do, however, support the copyright status of products which have organized
the data into what we information-technology types would call a "useable"
format. (i.e., in structured files or databases). Having done that on a
limited basis, I can tell you it is a hell of a lot of work you get to do
only after you've put forth a hell of a lot of creative effort, and that
work deserves protection.
