Wal-Mart is already using EDIFACT in many countries, with thousands of
partners, including with our neighbors just south of the border. I helped
Wal-Mart and many of its vendors in Mexico migrate from ANSI to EDIFACT in
1997, when the Mexican Government adopted EDIFACT as their official standard.
Up until then, ANSI was the defacto standard. In less than two years almost
every company in Mexico had migrated to EDIFACT, including Wal-Mart, all its
vendors, and all local Banks.
Perhaps we can't expect Wal-Mart to migrate anytime soon in the US, but we
can motivate others to start new projects, to experiment with EDIFACT just like
many have done with XML. We have nothing to loose, unlike ANSI, EDIFACT is
free, and is the international standard used evreywhere in the world (except
the US?).
