If you don't see drives there *on the desktop*, you should check your finder settings, that's true. Why is it so important to open your desktop folder when it is already on the desktop? I don't get this.
Also, if you're using pre OS X 10.2, there are few reasons I know of, not to update to at least 10.1.5. Last time I checked it was free (well, not Public beta version). As far as I'm concerned the only versions worth to bitch about is 10.1.5 and 10.2.4, unless of course you use a special app that demands some other version. The versions, not 10.1.5 or 10.2.4 or later, usually have one good solution: upgrade! I've been more an more satisfied with every version, but one should check each major app of course first.
