Actually that's true. The Desktop folder within the UserName folder does 
not show the hard drive, even with Finder prefs set to show the HDs. I 
agree this is weird and inconsistant on Apple's part, though this is 
never the folder I use to find my HDs - I click the computer symbol in 
the Tool Bar and then I see a window with my HDs and any mounted media or 
servers (I prefer column view myself, with list view for when I need to 
check dates of many items in a folder).
