Here is my best answer for anti-virus softwareOS 9:

1. Find a copy of Disinfectant 3.7.1. It was last updated in 1995, but it
works fine, no conflicts with OS 8 or 9, amazingly. Even the protection
extension has no conflicts after 9 years. I believe there are three
problems Disinfectant doesn't handle, the Autostart virus, Microsoft
Macro viruses, and one other, which I don't remember, but is very rare.
Because of Macro and the Autostart viirus, a generic warning was placed
on the original Disinfectant home page, but you can ignore it.

Now you have to take care of the handful of "new" viruses.

2. Disable autorun inside Quicktime.

3. Create some empty text files, called DB, DELDB, Desktop DB, DBDesktop
Printer Spooler, Desktop Print Spooler DELDesktop, Print Spooler, and
lock them in the Finder. Put the Desktop Print Spooler and DELDesktop
Print Spooler files in your Extensions folder. Put the other files in
your boot volume icon, essentially the highest (root) level.

4. Don't use Word or other Microsoft products. Failing that, disable all
Macros in Office. Also: Don't use Hypercard if you are *really* worried,
or don't want to spend a penny on protection. There are a few Hypercard
trojans, but they can only infect other Hypercard decks.

5. Buy yourself a case of wine each year with the savings. I think this
takes care of all 40 Mac OS 9 viruses, but I am happy to be corrected if
there is one I missed.

1. See step 4 and 5, above.
