Emailer doesn't insist on encoding... mail servers insist that file 
attachments are encoded.

If you are using Thunderbird to send attachments, then go back to 
Emailer, and each time you would use Thunderbird, select Base64 from the 
popup menu for Encoding: (where it normally says Service Default).

Thunderbird is also encoding file attachments, it is just using Base64 
instead of what is probably your default in Emailer of either BinHex 
(default on an account when it is setup), or AppleDouble (what most 
people change the default to).

But trust me, Thunderbird is indeed encoding those attachments. There is 
no choice, you have to if you are going to send an 8 bit file to a 7 bit 
mail server.
