That'll do me for M10 and up, but it's scary for Gene's M3. I was certain I was going to break the tap if I persisted with 82% engagement, which is as close to D-1p as you get with 0.1mm drill size steps. That's the thing with a simplistic rule of thumb, it breaks down at the limits.
