It speed improvement did persist through quitting and re-launching. I can't
say how long it lasts since I've received/deleted mail since then and I'm
sure that would affect the caching.

You are correct on this one. The search within BBEdit only took ~6.5
seconds. My thought on using the Multi-File Search came about when I was
trying to decide whether archiving messages to mBox files would be an
efficient way to archive.
