I do this and I can still send mail at home and at work - albeit that I have
to manually change accounts.

I have an Earthlink account, mac.com and work account. So I have an account
set up for all of these, then I have an account that says it is from
Earthlink, but sends through works SMTP. And vice a versa. I also can't send
mac.com from work (I am behind a firewall), so I have a send from mac.com
through works SMTP.

I do send my mac.com email via smtp.mac.com when I am logged into Earthlink.
The only times I have had problems is when mac.com has problems. I also
still use mail.earthlink.net for mail that I want sent using my Earthlink
address.
